Cam’ron is all for Drake‘s love of Dipset, even though the general public has clowned the Toronto native over his fandom in the past.
Drizzy caught flack early last year for wearing the Harlem native’s classic pink fur when he performed at the Apollo and brought the group out as surprise guests. As part of his new GQcover shoot, Killa spoke on the topic in his interview published online on Thursday (February 15) — and he just saw the moment as nothing more than Drake showing love.
“It’s no different from anybody else just trying to show love,” Cam said. “A rapper that’s younger than me who grew up watching what we did. I fucking grew up wanting to get a chain because EPMD had the gold link going on, or Big Daddy Kane‘s rope chain. When it’s somebody of Drake’s magnitude, you ought to show love.
“A lot of people want to criticize and say he’s [too] commercial. He’s the modern day Michael Jackson that can also rap. You got to realize the type of run he’s on.”
In January, Drake was actually crowned an honorary fifth member of Dipset after he brought the iconic Harlem group out during his two shows at the Apollo Theater.
During night one, Drizzy wore the aforementioned pink fur coat and hat, and was gifted a custom OVO x Dipset bracelet by Jim Jones.
“These guys right here from Harlem made us dress different, talk different, walk different, rap different — all the way in Canada,” the Toronto hitmaker told the crowd before Cam, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana and Freekey Zekey left the stage.
For the second night, Drake wore the Diplomats’ U.S. flag jacket that Cam’ron wore in his “Get ‘Em Girls” music video, while Santana and Jones rocked custom Dipset x OVO jackets designed by Jeff Hamilton.
